Artistic concept of the surface of Ceres - the dwarf planet orbiting in the asteroids belt - and some props just for fun.
It's the biggest member of the asteroids belt, between Mars and Jupiter: one third of our Moon and half of Pluto, but massive enough to assume an almost spherical shape, it can be classified as a dwarf planet.
The map I drew (August 2013) is obviously an artistic concept: It's based on two blurred images from the Hubble space telescope and two infrared images from the Hawaii's Keck II observatory.

It would be a loop animation, except for some Internet Explorer :noes: if so, right click > active loop and play.
Made with 3D Studio Max and After Effects. No stocks. I drew every single pixel of the scene.

:new: recently featured on NASA's Dawn mission site!

Yep, like Sean Deany said NASA is accepting Ceres art, your depiction of the dwarf is pretty cool , you should submit it :)   dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/dawncommunit…

Excellent animation and very convincing concept considering the currently vague imagery available. As it is only about 6 weeks now until higher than Hubble quality images will come available from NASA's DAWN probe I would like you to contact the DAWN team, as I have done recently, to inspire them to allow artists / illustrators to put forward their concepts for what 1Ceres may appear like. This said I look forward to - in the not to distant future seeing real images from DAWN. Its going to be an exciting year in 2015 when it comes to firstly 1Ceres and later Pluto getting a close fly by. I have recently up dated my own concept for how 1Ceres may appear once DAWN is in orbit.

This is gorgeous! Very good job with creating this animation. I have liked Ceres since many many years ago learned about its existence and also its former status as a planet. I gues it was also one reason why I was not so surprised about what happened to Pluto in 2006. I think I could point out that Ceres has orbital period of 4.6 not 4.9 years. Anyway this is very very good.

uh, the orbital period... I think I read too many numbers that week :D

Can hardly wait until Dawn arrives!

Some believe Ceres has a sizable subsurface liquid ocean. If humanity eventually has a presence in the main belt, I would expect Ceres to be a hub.

With it's high angular velocity and shallow gravity well, Clarke towers from Ceres are very doable.

Why? Ceres it's 2.5 times little than Pluto; It orbits between Mars and Jupiter, not beyond Neptune; it takes 5 years to complete an orbit and not 248 years like Pluto.

oh... there was a title for the planet?! i didn't see it... all i really saw was its size and i didn't know or forgot the fact that it took so long for pluto to make a full orbit. oops. and its *Smaller not little. the way to worded it is wrong. simple mistake though, from typing so fast. one time i ended up typing something totally unrelated to the topic at which i was writing
